Becoming Familiar with and Navigating WHM

October 26th, 2010 No comments

This tutorial assumes you have already logged into WHM.

WHM is your resellers control panel. The purpose of WHM is to give resellers the control they need to create hosting accounts, delete them, suspend the, upgrade them and to provide other tools that will help manage hosting accounts.

Every hosting account created in WHM has a cPANEL, or END USER control panel.

In the CENTER FRAME there are several ICONS (or links) to click on.

The Center frame Icons correspond to the HEADINGS in the left frame.

Clicking on an icon will bring up SUBICONS that correspond to all the tools available on the left.

Click the ACCOUNT INFORMATION ICON.

Notice the five tools available to use under Account Information.

To access any of the tools, click on the icon, or you can click on the corresponding link in the left frame. These subtool links are also available from the WHM homepage.

To see all tools available in WHM, scroll down the left frame.

Near the top of your screen there are several links. The NEWS link is where you would get news from your reseller plan provider, if they use this feature in WHM.

Click the CHANGE LOG link. This page shows you detailed information of your version of WHM and historical information about when it was updated and what changes were made.

To logout of WHM simply close your browser or click the LOG OUT link.

Checking Server Status and Information in WHM

October 25th, 2010 No comments

This tutorial assumes you have already logged into WHM.

Click the SERVER STATUS link.

Here you will find a list of services running in your server and their status whether the services are UP or whether the services are FAILING.

From the green lights demonstrated on the right side of the screen, you can determine that all services are UP AND RUNNING.

If the lights were RED (FAILING) or YELLOW (ABOUT TO FAIL) then more investigation would be needed to find out why, and how to get the services back up and running.

One of the more important items on this list is the SERVER LOAD. It’s a good indication of how hard the server is being run. If the load gets much above 1.00 (depending on your server configuration), it may be overloaded.

At the bottom of the LIST OF SERVICES your HARD DRIVE is listed in partitions, and you can see how much storage space is being used. It is typically the /HOME DIRECTORY where all the hosting account files are located, so you should ensure that there is plenty of space available.

In the demo, there is a /BACKUP partition set up on a separate hard drive (HDC) and it’s currently 33% full.

Now click the SEVER INFORMATION link.

On the Server Information page you can see the complete details of your server.

October 25th, 2010 No comments

This tutorial assumes you have already logged into WHM.

Click on the PASSWORD MODIFICATION link.

Remember that the WHM PASSWORD is the same as the CPANEL PASSWORD for your main account.

Select your main account from the ACCOUNT SELECTION screen.

Now enter a NEW PASSWORD in the provided box.

Scroll down.

Click the CHANGE button.

You’ve successfully changed your main password!

Click LIST ACCOUNTS.

Since you’ve just changed the WHM password, you will be REQUIRED TO LOG IN again before being able to do anything else in WHM.

You now know how to change your WHM password!

REMEMBER: keep your password in a safe place. Although you can change the passwords for any account in your WHM from WHM, you cannot retrieve a lost WHM password. If you lose it, you’ll have to contact your RESELLER PLAN PROVIDER to have it reset or changed.

Generating and Installing SSL Certificates in WHM

October 24th, 2010 No comments

This tutorial assumes you are already logged into WHM.

Click on the SSL/TLS link.

Getting your own domain specific SSL CERTIFICATE installed and working properly is a three step process:

1.       Generate a request

2.       Purchase an SSL certificate

3.       Install the certificate

Click the GENERATE A SSL CERTIFICATE AND SIGNING REQUEST link.

In this table, you must enter information about the domain name for which the certificate is requested. Enter an EMAIL ADDRESS where the certificate request information should be sent.

Enter the DOMAIN NAME the certificate will be fore.

The rest of the information on the form describes who the certificate is for, and will be displayed within the certificate.

Complete the rest of the form.

When finished, click the CREATE button.

Step 1 is now complete. You’ve just generated a CERTIFICATE SIGNING REQUEST (CSR) and a KEY, both of which are encrypted.

This information would also have to be emailed to the email address provided on the previous page, and will be needed later when you install the certificate.

The next step is to PURCHASE A CERTIFICATE. This cannot be demonstrated in this tutorial. You have to go to an SSL CERTIFICATE VENDOR to purchase the certificate. They will require the CERTIFICATE SIGNING REQUEST generated in Step 1.

Once you have successfully purchased the certificate, you must return here to INSTALL it (Step 3).

Click the INSTALL A SSL CERTIFICATE AND SET UP DOMAIN link.

This screen is where you install your newly purchased SSL CERTIFICATE.

The DOMAIN, USER and IP ADDRESS boxes may automatically fill when you paste your certificate in, but if not enter the information manually.

Next paste the KEY from Step 1.  If required, the CA BUNDLE should be copied and pasted in its designated spot.

Next, click the SUBMIT button.

Your SSL Certificate should now be installed.

How to Change an Account Password in WHM

October 24th, 2010 No comments

This tutorial assumes you are already logged into WHM.

You may need to change an account password if the customer LOSES their password or for SECURITY reasons, but remember you can always tell a customer that they can CHANGE THEIR OWN password from their cPanel so you really should only need to use the WHM password modification if it’s been FORGOTTEN and the customer cannot log in to cPanel.

Click on the PASSWORD MODIFICATION link.

Now select the account that needs the password changed.

Enter a NEW PASSWORD for the selected account in the provided box.

Remember that account passwords must be between SIX AND EIGHT CHARACTERS LONG, and must START WITH A LOWER CASE LETTER and should contain a combination of both letters and numbers.

Click the CHANGE button.

That’s it! The password has been changed.

You now know how to change the password of any account in your WHM.
